Abstract
This living open educational resource contains interactive Jupyter notebooks, instructional materials, and selected assignments developed for an upper-level natural language processing course. The current release focuses on several core course modules and is not yet a complete textbook — it is continually expanded and updated as the field evolves, with additional chapters, explanations, and exercises added over time. Description
This resource is designed for university-level natural language processing courses and independent study. The materials are presented as Jupyter notebooks that integrate conceptual explanations, examples, visualizations, and executable experiments. Most notebooks can be opened directly in Google Colab without local installation.
The resource covers topics ranging from foundational natural language processing methods to transformers, large language models, model adaptation, and agentic AI. It is maintained as a living open educational resource, with its content periodically expanded and updated to reflect the rapid evolution of natural language processing and artificial intelligence.
Instructors may use the resource as a course companion, select individual notebooks for lectures or laboratory activities, or adapt the materials into assignments. Because it is continually updated, learners and instructors are encouraged to consult the online version at https://mlciv.com/nlp-notebooks/ for the most current content.
Some notebooks incorporate or adapt openly licensed third-party materials, which remain under their original licenses; attributions and links are provided within the relevant chapters.
