Orange Team 2019: Critical design review (CDR)
Abstract
The following thesis is tailored towards orange team completing the 2019 SpeedFest competition. For this competition, the aircraft will consist of a streamline body that will be able to do a quiet recon that is under a noise intensity of 78 dBA. Other than being under a noise level, the aircraft will be using a 30x zoom camera that that able to see a sign from up to 1000 feet. To complete this mission, orange team will be using a jet engine to allow for a more robust body. To keep the noise intensity below the threshold of 78 dBA, an 8-lobe nozzle will be created to help introduce mixing between the exhaust and the air. By doing this, the exhaust velocity will decrease enough to keep the noise level down and maintain the required thrust to remain above the 130 knots threshold. For orange team’s plane, the highest recorded velocity is recorded to be 168 knots, with the average being 145 knots. The recorded noise intensity from completing the mission is under 78 dBA.
