dc.description.abstractScope of Study: A review was made of the factors related to a poor student attitude and lack of academic interest in the high school at Agua Dulce, Texas in the year 1957-58. Factors considered were; the nature of the community, the administration and faculty, the school plant, the students, extra-curricular activities, and precedents. Opinions and information were secured through the use of a standard questionnaire. Copies of the questionnaire were distributed to students and teachers in the school, individuals in the community, and to other individuals interested in schools in other areas. The report was formulated on a basis of a composite summary of opinions as indicated by the responses to the questionnaire, opinions of other individuals with whom the writer had personal contact, and the writer's own opinions.
dc.description.abstractFindings and Conclusions: Established precedent was considered to be a major factor in the problem of poor attitude and lack of academic interest. Excessive emphasis in athletics weakened the academic program. The size of the school did not lend to the best utilization of competition as a motivational influence and prevented the use of ability grouping. The unlimited use of automobiles on the part of students was a detriment to the development of a proper interest in studies. Lack of required after school duties and the possession of considerable wealth tended to prevent the development of a sense of responsibility by the students. Some students with high intelligence had not been properly challenged by school work in the past and failed to make the proper use of their ability. Student participation in school government is encouraged under proper guidance. Our schools need administrators and teachers with great breadth of human understanding and strength of character.
