Exploring new markets for pressure recalibrating instruments

Abstract

Scope and Method of Study: This study analyzes a survey of engineers, technicians, maintenance supervisors, and others involved with the recalibration of pressure gauges to determine if markets for pressure recalibrating devices exist outside of the Oil and Gas Industries. Exploratory mail and phone questionnaires probe the usage rates and buying habits of several industries. Finally, questions concerning brand ownership and ratings will reveal market share and product awareness regarding the pressure recalibrating instrument manufacturers.

Findings and Conclusions: Virtually all of the industries questioned are regular users of pressure recalibrating instruments. The most attractive industries were Chemical, Electrical Utilities, and General Manufacturing. Accuracy, sensitivity and durability were the key product attributes, while previous experience and personal recommendations were the major buying influences. "Control Engineer" and "Chemical Engineer" appear to be the most widely read magazines in most countries and industries. Lastly, the market is dominated by Ametek and Ashcroft, while EG&G Chandler and Wallace and Tiernan lead a pack of other small share manufacturers. Overall, there appears to be a large market for pressure recalibrating devices outside of the Oil and Gas Industries. Given the condition of these two markets, pressure recalibrating manufacturers must pursue the new markets that have been identified with a comprehensive well devised plan.
