In this study I have tried to present the Quantum Theory of Free Electron Lasers in connection with the classical theories. A model for wiggler wavelength-tapering is proposed as a gain enhancement mechanism and Quantum Mechanical calculations of frequencies and gain have been carried out. In Chapter I, I have tried to give an overall account of Free Electron Lasers especially the experimental aspects before I discussed the theory in later chapters. Chapter I I summarizes the Classical theories and ca~ be skipped if one is interested in Quantum Theory only. Chapter I II discusses the proposed model for tapering. Quantum Theory is presented in Chapters IV and V.
