Planning is one of the most important aspects of performance in organizations. The present study investigates a number of facilitative influences on organizational planning, including the threat of external pressure in the form of competition, timeframe, and workload. Results indicate that external competition has a strong effect on planning performance, with heavier competition resulting in better planning. Timeframe also appears to influence individuals’ ability to succeed in the planning process. Workload does not have much effect on their own, but contribute to unique interactions. Implications of these findings are discussed.
