The OU Academy of the Lynx was established in 2002 with official permission from the Accademia dei Lincei in recognition of the OU Galileo collection. Its purpose as a Friends organization was to promote the History of Science Collections and increase its visibility in the central Oklahoma area. Numerous events were held both on and off campus up through 2015. During the Galileo’s World exhibit in 2015-2016, K12 exhibit-based educational outreach took place in the name of the OU Lynx. These Open Educational Resources (OERs) supported docent-led class visits to OU Libraries and docent-led programs for students third grade and up at area schools and public libraries. Item Open Access Apiarium(1625) Lynx Open Ed;In this first publication of observations made with a microscope, Cesi and Stelluti studied the anatomy of the bee. The text includes classical references to bees as well as new knowledge, integrated in a tabular outline. The title area shows four ancient coins depicting bees, and the crest of the Barberini family showing three busy bees. Because only a handful were printed, the type has bitten deeply into the paper. Oklahoma holds one of only four extant printed copies. Since Orion's belt of three bright stars lies nearly upon the celestial equator, Orion is visible from every inhabited part of the globe. This OER explores the history and mythology of the Orion constellation.Item Open Access Maria Cunitz: Kepler's Defender(2015) Magruder, KerryMaria Cunitz was one of the first astronomers to adopt Johann Kepler's astronomy. She made Kepler's achievement easy to grasp, and demonstrated that Kepler's laws were more accurate than anything that had come before. This OER shows high-quality images from Cunitz's book.Item Open Access Johan Schreck: Galileo's Friend in China(2015) Magruder, KerryJohann Schreck joined the Jesuit order in 1611, the same year that he used Galileo's telescope to observe the satellites of Jupiter. Upon becoming a Jesuit Schreck joined the Jesuit mission in China, taking with him a scientific library of approximately 7,000 volumes as well as a Galilean telescope. Schreck, along with the other Jesuits in China, helped to exchange scientific ideas between Europe and Asia. This OER explores this relationship and includes high-quality images from books in this period.Item Open Access Astronomy & Music: Introduction to the Duochord(2015) Annis, JonathanThe ancient Pythagoreans envisioned the heavens as celestial spheres rotating according to harmonious music. For Robert Fludd, a seventeenth-century physician, the universe was a monochord, its physical structure unintelligible without an understanding of music. This OER shows high-quality images from Fludd's seventeenth-century work as well as an activity to explore the relationship between mathematics and music.Item Open Access Margaret Bryan: Science Education(2015) Magruder, KerryMargaret Bryan was a schoolmistress for a boarding school for girls in London, in which she taught mathematics and science. She also published several popular scientific textbooks on astronomy, geography, and natural philosophy. This OER shows high-quality images from Bryan's 18th and 19th century books.Item Open Access Wondertooneel: Women and Museums(2015) Magruder, KerryLevinus Vincent, a wealthy Dutch merchant with ties to the East Indies, created a spectacular 'Chamber of Wonders' natural history museum in Haarlem. Visiting dignitaries admired his museum, including Peter the Great and King Charles III of Spain. The detailed depictions of interior spaces include figures of women visitors. Museums such as Vincent's offered women opportunities for participation in the natural sciences as donors, collectors, discoverers, visitors, patrons, lecturers and even curators. This OER explores the role of women in these early museums.Item Open Access Hildegard of Bingen: An Abbess for Health Care(2015) Magruder, KerryHildegard of Bingen, Abbess of convents at Rupertsberg and Elbingen in the 12th century, explained their herbal remedies and medical procedures in her book, Physica. In addition to this work on medicine, Hildegard wrote other works on cosmology and theology, corresponded in nearly 400 letters with abbots, popes and emperors, and created at least 70 musical compositions. This OER explores the significance of Hildegard of Bingen.Item Open Access Florence Nightingale: Professionalized Health Care(2015) Magruder, KerryFlorence Nightingale championed social reform and the organization of nursing as a profession. During the Crimean War, she organized the care of injured soldiers, making the rounds at night as the ÐLady with the lamp.Ð Her emphasis on hygiene and hand washing dramatically reduced the death rate. This OER explores the breadth of Nightingale's work in the nineteenth century.Item Open Access Maria Merian: World-Traveling Entomologist(2015) Magruder, KerryMaria Merian (1647-1717), skilled in both art and natural history, studied the relationships between flowers and insects. She conducted research in gardens and museums, produced detailed sketches and beautiful paintings, and even bred insects to aid in her entomological investigations. This OER explores the role of Merian in the development of entomology.Item Open Access Catherine Whitwell: Astronomy & Creative Writing(2015) Magruder, KerryCatherine Whitwell wrote an introduction to the night sky as a dialogue between a mother and daughter. It contains 23 engraved plates drawn by Whitwell herself, including four hand colored folding plates. One of the plates depicts the constellations of Corvus the Crow, Crater the Cup and Hydra the Water Snake. Another plate conveys a dramatic impression of the Full Moon at night, shown against a striking black background. This OER explores the role of Whitwell in astronomy education.Item Open Access Boldly Explore(2015) Flammarion, Camille; Magruder, Susanna;Although many attribute this iconic image to the Middle Ages, it first appeared in a 19th century work of meteorology. So it's fitting that this book will open a Galileo's World exhibit at the National Weather Center on Copernicus and Meteorology. Ever wish there were a colorized version available in a suitable resolution which educators and anyone could freely use? This is why Susanna J. Magruder created the colorized version of Flammarion's woodcut shown above, which she is distributing with a CC-by license. Enjoy! You can put it on your website, a t-shirt, a coffee mug, or print out a copy on quality paper for your wall.Item Open Access Urania's Mirror: Constellation Cards(2015) Magruder, KerryUrania's Mirror was a set of constellation cards designed to aid in the teaching and learning of constellations. This set includes 32 cards, each focused upon one or a few constellations. Holes punched in the positions of bright stars allow one to hold any card up to a light and compare the star pattern with the constellation figure. This OER introduces these cards and includes a high-quality pdf of them to print and create your own.Item Open Access Relativity of Motion: The Moving Ship Thought Experiment(2015) Magruder, KerryGalileo's "Dialogue on the Two Chief Systems of the World," includes a discussion about dropping balls from the mast of both a moving ship and a ship at rest in order to test the theory of inertia. If sailors actually had performed the experiment, believing with Aristotle that a cannonball dropped from the mast would fall harmlessly into the wake of the ship, why were no reports made to the contrary? This OER includes a cartoon with an answer to the question.Item Open Access Madame du Châtelet: Newtonian Physicist(2015) Magruder, KerryMadame du Châtelet translated Newton's masterwork of physics, the "Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy," into French. She also defended Newton in the Newton-Leibniz controversy. This OER shoes images from some of du Châtelet's works as well as how she is pictured in Algarotti's popular introduction to Newtonian science.Item Open Access Pythagorean Solids: Five Regular Solids(2015) Magruder, KerryThroughout history the regular solids were a point of intrigue by astronomers, mathematicians, artists, and philosophers. The Pythagoreans proved that there are only five regular solids: the cube, triangle, octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron. This OER offers high-quality images from books published in the 16th and 17th centuries which feature the five regular solids.
