Abstract

Education is the gateway to success for Latino children and families (Cabrera et al., 2024; Marrun, 2018). Yet, the research shows a disconnect between the expectations of public schools and those of Latino parents (Auerbach, 2002; Gandara, 2002; Irizarry, 2011; Marrun, 2018; Murillo et al., 2009; Rodriguez et al., 2015). The primary focus of this study is to explore the common educational and collegiate experiences of Latino children and families as they navigate the American education system while also learning from Latino college graduates about how they navigated these systems. Through a qualitative narrative analysis study, the researcher takes a holistic approach in learning from multiple perspectives. This study informs educational professionals about Latino experiences and how to guide Latino students and families in their educational endeavors, while valuing their culture and assets they bring to the school and their communities. It also amplifies Latino voices in education by strengthening relationships between schools and Latino families to listen and learn about their Latino aspirations and understanding of college processes (Gandara, 2002). Lastly, it addresses the need in early childhood and elementary programs to expose and introduce young children to college pathways. Through a cross-case analysis, six primary themes were constructed: Resilience Built out of Necessity; Family as the Emotional Center of Support, Love, and Sacrifice; Education as a Pathway to Success; Identity Formation Through Their Struggles and Persistence; Cultural Values Served as a Resource; and, Navigating the Political Climate. Keywords: Latinos, education, resilience, collectivist, capital, immigration, discrimination
