Abstract

This strategic white paper examines the institutional value of the Data Institute for Societal Challenges at the University of Oklahoma. It describes DISC’s role as a university-wide catalyst for convergent research by connecting faculty, students, data, technologies, and external partners across disciplinary and campus boundaries. The report examines DISC’s contributions through transdisciplinary collaboration, seed funding, research development, workforce preparation, Communities of Practice, and leadership of multidisciplinary initiatives. Evidence of impact includes seed-funded research teams, external funding leverage, selected project outcomes, strategic research portfolios, and publication activity. The report also highlights DISC’s contributions in energy, extreme weather, health, national security, artificial intelligence, and supply-chain resilience. It concludes with recommendations for strengthening university-wide collaboration, research competitiveness, student engagement, and partnerships that translate data-enabled research into societal impact.
