Chapter I introduces the investigation, states its purpose and problem, its limitations, a definition of terms, and a preview of its organization.en_US
Chapter IV presents seven case studies of writers whose planning decisions while composing are analyzed, described, and compared with one another. Subjects include two "basic" writers, two traditional writers, one "honors" writer, one writing teacher, and one professional writer.en_US
Chapter V presents a summary of the data derived from the case studies, as well as conclusions from that data. It suggests research implications, as well as implications for the teaching of freshman composition with an increased awareness of planning considerations.en_US
Chapter III presents the method and design of the research, and includes a description of the "composing aloud" technique.en_US
Chapter II reviews available literature relevant to the investigation, classifying research data on planning, and surveying literature recommending case-study methodology for composing research.en_US
This study sought to characterize and describe some of the differences which exist in planning considerations among writers from the most unskilled to the most proficient. Using a case-study method and protocol analysis first employed by Janet Emig in her landmark 1971 study of the composing processes of twelfth graders, this study examines seven writers of increasing proficiency in an effort to compare their composing processes with particular reference to planning.en_US
