This study made use of a sample of the 2006 National Survey for Student Engagement dataset. The variables being examined were time spent involved in extracurricular activities and academic performance. The data was analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and factorial ANOVA. Additionally, the means for the variables were plotted against each other and the shape of these relationships were analyzed. It was found that there was a curvilinear relationship between the time spent involved in extracurricular activities and academic performance. It was found that a light amount of extracurricular involvement is beneficial to grades, while too much involvement can potentially hurt academic performance in college students.
