This study investigates the use of liquid propane for soybean oil extraction and the use of commercial software for process modeling and simulation. Soybean oil extraction using liquid propane is feasible and requires lower operating temperatures and pressures compared to processes using other solvents such as hexane or carbon dioxide. Process models for a 5 liter extraction unit have been developed and validated using experimental data. These models were then used to design, size, and cost a 130 liter extraction process. Modification and alternatives to improve process performance have also been suggested.
