Most individuals seeking therapy services have specific presenting problems that are the focus of treatment. This study created a coding system designed to encompass the majority of problems that people reported. The coding system uses three primary categories of codes: Unit of Focus; Abstract Content code; and Specific Content Code. This coding system shows construct, content, and face validity. The inter-rater reliability was 69% for the Unit of Focus, 72% for the Abstract content codes, and 61% for Specific Content codes. This study forms a baseline for this new coding system and with improvement in coder training and with future testing the reliability and validity of this coding scheme should increase.
