Genetic Markers for Increased Milk Production in Sheep
Abstract
Milk production is an economically important trait for the sheep industry, however the trait is moderately heritable, expressed relatively late in life, and expressed in only one sex. The efficiency of selection for milk production in sheep would be improved by the identification of informative genetic markers. A single nucleotide polymorphism in the beta-lactoglobulin gene (BLG) and prolactin gene (PRL) were investigated with respect to the genetic merit (EBV) for milk production in East Friesian sheep.
