Research conducted in agricultural education revealed a lack of participation among FFA members. However, of those FFA members who are participating in FFA events, students were most satisfied with their experiences in Career Development Events (CDEs). The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine how secondary Oklahoma agricultural education teachers motivated their students to participate in CDEs. To understand how teachers motivate students, this study used the expectancy-value theory of motivation. Findings from this study revealed six themes teachers use to motivate students. These findings included 1) tradition and success of the chapter, 2) opportunities for competition, 3) gaining life skills, 4) enabling students to have fun, 5) recruiting members, and 6) CDEs are an integral part of the curriculum.
