Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) protocol was developed to deploy Internet contents on hand held mobile devices. Initially WAP 1.0 was developed to deliver Internet contents over the wireless Internet. WAP 1.0 protocol was optimized for low bandwidth networks. Wireless Session Protocol (WSP) and Wireless Markup Language (WML) were used for communication and transfer data between WAP Client and WAP Server. The version of WAP protocol used today is WAP 2.0. This version uses wireless profiled HTTP stack and HTML. So no special language is required and regular HTML pages can be accessed. WAP 2.0 architecture also supports WAP 1.0 architecture for backward compatibility. The objective of my thesis is to study WAP 2.0 protocol architecture and improve the throughput by reduce time delays in the WAP architecture. We will incorporate different compression algorithms in WAP 2.0 model and calculate their effects on WAP 2.0 architecture. We will also aim to limit the use of WAP Gateway as WAP Gateway is not a mandatory part of WAP 2.0 architecture.
