dc.description.abstractThe objectives of this study were to determine if foaling can be predicted within 24-hours by monitoring levels of the mammary secretions collected from pregnant mares. The levels monitored included calcium content, static ORP, capacity and pH. After collecting the sample, measurements were taken, recorded and compared with previous samples to determine a change in levels. Testing began on day 337 of gestation and continued until parturition. Levels throughout all tests remained steady at normal levels. The day before parturition, levels started changing dramatically, namely pH and calcium content which decreased and increased, respectively. The mare foaled about 18 hours after this change was detected. The results of this study showed mare parturition to be predicted within 24-hours of the change in level of pH and calcium content.
