The General Aptitude Test Battery as a predictor of success on the General Education Development Test.

Abstract

Two equations were found for each of the dependent variables; one had a single independent variable, the other had two independent variables. Standard errors of regression were also found for each of the equations. All equations were found to be significant at the 0.0001 level.

The purpose of this study was to establish regression equations that could be used by adult educators to predict; (1)scores on the General Education Development Test and (2)the number of hours of preparation necessary to pass the General Education Development Test. Aptitude scores from the General Education Development Test preparation program sponsored by Oklahoma County CETA and Oscar Rose Junior College. Participants attended preparation classes thirty hours a week until their instructors determined that they were ready to test. Only those who successfully completed the General Education Development Test were included in the study.

General Aptitude Test Battery scores, General Education Development Test scores, and the number of hours each participant was in the program were recorded on data cards. Using the Statistical Analysis System with maximum R-squared technique, regression equations were generated for each of the General Education Development sub-test scores, for the average score, and for the number of hours spent in a preparation class.
