Drowning desert

Abstract

This is a piece that I have written as my Creative Component for my Honors Degree. As a Creative Writing Major. The piece is a mystery story that covers the appearance of an unidentifiable body in a town in the middle of nowhere, better known as Western Texas. The story follows the investigations of a Texas State Trooper, Roman Brown, as he attempts to figure out who the body is as quickly as possible. To conflict matters though, this town in the middle of nowhere was the one that he grew up in as a child, and the one that he has avoided returning to as much as possible. He will have to work with Jonah, the town's sheriff who has known Roman since he was a kid and isn't necessarily the greatest at laying down the law in his own town. After all, why arrest someone when you can give them a stern talking to? Besides Jonah, there is the town's detective Gregory, who has worked with Roman in the past. Since the incident that sent him to this town in the middle of nowhere was related the Roman, their relationship soured. Despite Roman possessing better relationships with other characters, he still wants to get out of there and solve the crime as quickly as possible. This often means making a mockery out of being a detective: ignoring anything that will keep him from his goal of leaving.

Further complicating this already mysterious case is a mysterious man dressed in yellow, some missing teeth, some letters, flat tires, fireworks, a landline phone, and rain. I hope you like rain, because if you want to hear all the ways that I can describe it raining outside, or stepping in a puddle, or just water in general, then this is the story for you. This piece is a 74-page novella, clocking at 21,168 words. With all that being said, I hope you enjoy.
