| dc.description.abstract | This panel will present on the basics of library and archive cataloging and metadata creation, and demonstrate how these processes and the institutions who employ them have historically embedded and perpetuated systems of oppression in the form of encoding an exclusionarily-defined “model user” into library and archive systems, portrayed oppressed and marginalized peoples and cultures in biased and sometimes offensive ways, as well as discuss how these systems affect the usage of library and archive materials. We will also discuss historical and current practices of addressing these exclusionary processes and invite attendees to discuss how they have experienced and understood these topics, and how we might envision solutions. | |
