This ArcGIS StoryMap explores the changes in Seoul’s real estate starting in the late 1900s due to gentrification and displacement. The two main areas studied throughout the StoryMap are the districts of Mapo-gu and Gangnam-gu, both popular areas of Seoul. Additionally, the StoryMap will go into the recent historical background of South Korea, the societal influence of popular Korean films, suspected government housing scandals, the economic differences in various Korean neighborhoods, and Julia’s own experience living in the city. The project’s goal is to have the audience understand how South Korea has grown in various aspects over the last several decades. This includes the increasing struggle to live in Seoul as housing becomes inaccessible but also the promotion of Korean culture and its growing influence on the broader global society.
