This piece is a hybrid critical and creative thesis designed to examine race in the classroom and women's bodies in the sonnet through a narrative critical lens. I work to contextualize my teaching experience in a diverse school with the work of authors such as bell hooks, Margarete Hunter, and Amanda Seales. This research highlights the racial inequalities that students encounter both in and out of the class room and adds to the conversation about the ways in which educators can fight hegemony. In addition, I examine women's bodies and representation in the sonnets, from Petrarch to Wanda Coleman. Employing the lenses of Gender Studies and Critical Race Theory, this work is contextualized with the work of theorists including Susan Bordo and Julia Kristeva. This critical work is situated with creative work consisting of various forms of original poetry including Prose Poetry, Ghazal, Sonnet, and American Sonnet. The poetry reflects the intersections between research and lived experience.
