AIChE design project: Abbasi Fuel Refinery retrofit
Abstract
In this thesis, my group and I are describing a refinery concept we have designed for a Mr. Abbasi in the Middle East. Amidst changing purity standards in fuel being produced in the Middle East, Mr. Abbasi is concerned that he will soon be forced out of business unless he retrofits his refinery, which is where my team comes in. We were to design a refinery from the ground up that would produce a 99% composition reformate stream of Benzene from two feed streams of differing Naphthalene constituent compounds while collecting hydrocarbon chains that could be collected for gasoline and diesel production, and selling the gasoline, diesel, Benzene and the Toluene and p-Xylene that are in the reformate stream as well. Our design proved to be very profitable over a thirty year period under both Kurdish and Iraqi tax regimes that it was examined under, and safety considerations were made with respect to the dangers of the compounds in the process and the dangers of an explosion under worst-case scenario analysis.
