Equine welfare issues within the showing and racing industries
Abstract
For my thesis, I researched current equine welfare problems in various industries such as the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, and the Jockey Club. The issues researched included abusive training techniques and drug use within showing and racing, as well as what happens to the horses when they are no longer of use to their owners. I used peer-reviewed sources, information from the American Veterinary Association, and the respective breed handbooks to compare rules, regulations, and penalties regarding the abuse. While these rules are similar among the associations, and the penalties have decreased the number of occurrences, abuse is still happening.
