| dc.description.abstract | This paper gives a brief description of the evolution of technical knowledge. The evolution of beam theory is given as an example from the field of strength of materials. Technical knowledge starts with information gained from early experiences. These experiences are enhanced with empirical data gained through experimentation. Theories are developed to help explain the observations and experimental results. First principle understanding (models) are developed and experimentally verified. Over time these principles prove valuable and gain acceptance. | |
