dc.description.abstractThe study sought to explore the role that aspects of self-compassion (self-kindness, common humanity, mindfulness, self-judgment, isolation, over-identification) and mindful awareness would have on the psychological wellbeing of those who reported a history of sexual assault during childhood (prior to age 18) and/or a history of sexual assault during adulthood (since age 18). Prior research has already established a significant relationship between mindfulness, and psychological wellbeing (Campos et al., 2016; Desrosiers et al., 2013), which aligns with the existing theory of the Temporal Model of Perceived Control (Frazier, 2003), and the current counseling theories within Mindfulness – and Acceptance Based Therapies (Hayes, 2004). Self-compassion has also been shown to increase psychological wellbeing (Barlow et al., 2017; Neff, 2003). The current study explored (a) the relationships between aspects of self-compassion, mindful awareness, and psychological wellbeing among college -matriculated students with childhood and/or recent experiences of sexual assault, and (b) doesvmindful awareness and aspects of self-compassion predict psychological wellbeing among undergraduate students with childhood experiences and/or recent experiences of sexual assault. All aspects of self-compassion variables and mindful awareness were entered into a hierarchical regression model separately for those who reported a childhood and/or those who reported a recent experience of sexual assault. Self-kindness, and mindful awareness were found to be significant predictors of psychological wellbeing for those with a childhood history of sexual assault. Self-kindness, isolation, and mindful awareness were found to be significant predictors of psychological wellbeing for those with a recent experience of sexual assault.en_US
