A preliminary procedure for standardization/calibration of nuclear depth backscatter moisture and density equipment is described# After a short discussion of theoretical considerations in nuclear measurement of moisture and density, the procedures used to construct secondary soil standards are described, as is the process of data collection. Experimental results are presented and discussed, and recommendations for additional work are givenq It is concluded that soil type affects nuclear response in measuring soil moisture and density.
