dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this project was to provide information on the relative merits of the various methods of connecting tensile reinforci ng bars in reinforced concrete construction. This project consisted of two parts. In Part I a seri es of 122 d ifferent bar samples were prepared and tested to failure . The deformed bar sizes considered were Nos . 9, 10, 11, and 14S for material having a nominal yield strength of 40,000 psi ( ASTM-A15 and ASTM-A408) and a nominal yield strength of 60,000 psi (ASTM-A432). A total of eight different splicing systems were studied plus a series of control bars (continuous bars without any splices ). Stress-strain diagrams are included for all samples that yielded sufficient data . On the basis of this study, the most promising types of splicing devices were selected for flexural tests which constituted Part II of this project. In Part II, a total of eight reinforced concrete beams were formed, having a single No . 11 size, (ASTM-A15) deformed reinforcement bar in the bottom of each member. Each beam was twelve feet in length and had a crosssection of 8" wide by 12 '' deep. A total of four different splicing devices were studied in this series plus one beam which contained a similar, continuous reinforcing bar (without a splice ) for control purposes. The results of Part I and Part II of this project are reported herein.
