Initial validation of the Balanced Life Inventory
Abstract
The purpose of this study was the initial validation of the Balanced Life Inventory (BLI) which contains seven subscales: Family, Friends, Faith, Fortune, Fun, Fitness and Satisfaction. The sample consisted of 143 subjects. Results suggest that the subscales have acceptable reliability for research purposes with reported Cronbach's alpha estimates ranging from .76 on the FAITH scale to .93 on the FAMILY scale. Other scale reliability estimates were: FRIENDS (.83), FORTUNE (.82), FITNESS (.79), and SATISFACTION (.86). Subjects' self-ratings were correlated with their corresponding BLI scale scores at the p<.001 level of significance. Discriminate validity was documented by each subscale's ability to detect differences in subjects on one or more hypothesized background characteristics. The BLI subsales were correlated with previously established scales with related constructs. Each of the BLI scales correlated at the p<.001 level with at least one of their corresponding validation scales.
