This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of composite beds containing catalysts with different active metals (Ni -Mo;, Cd-Mo:, Ni -W) on the upgrading of a coal liquid. Composite beds containing Ni-Mo catalysts and either Co-Mo or Ni-W catalyts did not have better upgrading performance than beds containing Ni-Mo catalyst in both zones.
