Due to escalating fuel prices beginning in the early 1970's refinery, petrochemical, and chemical plant management personnel have had to shift their philosophy from one of building larger production units to that of upgrading or retrofitting existing units to improve their energy efficiency. In order to examine one possiblity of a distillation retrofit, a case study has been performed on the installation of a retrofitted intermediate reboiler on an industrial depropanizer for minimum energy consumption.
