Feasibiltiy of a Wheat Marketing Center in Oklahoma
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of operating a non-profit, hard red winter wheat marketing center in Oklahoma. To determine if there was a need for a marketing center, total world wheat exports, world market share trends, recent industry developments, and the impacts of wheat quality characteristics on the end-use product were examined. A non-profit business structure was designed and budgets for the planning and start-up phases were developed, as well as a projected annual income statement. A statistical analysis was performed on wheat quality information to determine how wheat characteristics affected the functionality of flour and dough. A decline in overall U. S. exports and a decrease in market share due to changes in the wheat industry indicated the need for a marketing entity that focused on end-use quality characteristics. The business structure for Plains Grains, Inc. (PGI) was developed as a non-profit entity that focused on education and promotion of long-term business relationships. Although business activities were constrained to predict budgets, PGI has sufficient projected revenues to carry out the needed activities. Results of the statistical analysis indicated the wheat grade and non-grade characteristics which served as limited proxies for flour and dough functionality traits, although, due to the scarcity of data, conclusive results will require further study.
